MUMBAI: The Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation ( VVMC) on Thursday demolished an ashram illegally constructed by self-styled godman Asaram's son Narayan Sai on government land in Kumbharpda in Virar (E).

Three excavators, 50 policemen and around 60 labourers were involved in the demolition of the ashram spread on a four acres of the state government land. The entire operation went off smoothly with no incident of protest reported from the area. The ashram constructed in 2005 used to attract a large number of devotees.

The ashram came into the limelight after it was raided by the Gujarat police on October 25 after they suspected Sai to be hiding in the ashram. The Vasai tehsildar had then ordered the demolition of the ashram. Sai's former aide Mahendrasinh Chawla had sat on a dharna outside the tehsildar's office in Vasai, demanding demolition of the ashram. The Virar police had in 2008 registered a forgery case against Sai, but had never acted on it.
