BJP demands CCTV cameras in all ladies compartments of suburban trains

MUMBAI: Mumbai unit of Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded that the priority should be given to install close circuit television cameras in ladies compartment. Besides it has also demanded that the doors of the rakes should be closed when the train is stabled in the yard to prevent anti-social elements from making it dirty.

A memorandum that includes demands and suggestion to improve the suburban train services in Mumbai was handed over to TR Balu, Chairman of Standing committee on Railway,recently.

General secretary of Mumbai BJP Vinayak Kamath said, "All suburban train should have CCTV but priority should be given to ladies compartment as there have been increase incidents of attack on women in the recent past."

There have been concerns about the safety of women in suburban trains due to spurt in cases of violence. On October 18, three railway employees, including a senior section engineer, were arrested for molesting a schoolteacher at Matunga railway station. In August, a foreigner was mugged inside a running Western Railway local train at Marine Lines.

On August 6, a special Railway Protection Force (RPF) squad arrested a beggar, Govind Bhavsar (50), for allegedly defecating in first-class and ladies compartments on Central Railway trains. The CR had received 28 complaints about excreta being smeared inside compartments, mostly on CST-Karjat trains, in the last three months.
