Amir Hasan Ansari (69) was found dead in the lavatory of a coach. His medicines and shoes were found stuffed in a pillow case while his luggage and cellphone were missing. The post-mortem report said there were "signs of asphyxia with multiple abrasions" in his body. But what alarmed his family the most was Ansari's cellphone location that showed the 'Lucknow junction' for nearly 48 hours. "The autopsy revealed that my father died on September 25. But his body was found only after the Pushpak Express entered the Central Railway yard early on Saturday (September 26). We are puzzled as to why there was such a delay in finding his body," said Ansari's youngest son, Shadab, who is a dentist.
Ansari was travelling from Tilhar in Uttar Pradesh, where he has an ancestral property, to Mumbai. The CST Government Railway Police registered a case of accidental death. They have directed the family to UP's Sadar Bazar police station where a missing complaint was lodged by Ansari's relatives when he couldn't be reached on phone for long.
"My father had to change trains thrice to reach Mumbai from Tilhar. He would call us regularly to update us about his whereabouts. On September 22, he left Tilhar in a passenger train and reached Shahjahanpur. Two friends had dropped him at Tilhar station and someone we know spotted him at Shahjahanpur station, so we know he was safe till then. He had booked a ticket on the Triveni Express to reach Lucknow junction on the same day. Then from Lucknow, he was to board the Pushpak Express to reach Mumbai. But there was no word from him and we grew anxious," Shadab told TOI.
The crime branch later informed the family that Ansari's cellphone location showed 'Lucknow Junction' from September 22 to 24. "Why would my father not call us up or any of our relatives if he was stranded at Lucknow for two days. It doesn't make sense. There's a possibility that his cellphone was stolen, but then he could have dialled us later from a public phone at least," Shadab said. The family was stunned to receive a call from a Sandhurst Road yard staffer early on Saturday to disclose that Ansari's body had been found.
Ansari left behind four children, two of them daughters, all based in Mumbai.
"My father also had a land-related dispute in Tilhar. There are too many unanswered questions which I wish the police look into," Shadab said.
