The decision was taken on Thursday by the Thane police after they found that the five policemen were present in the Shanti Nagar police chowky on the day of the incident.
A senior officer said that a murder case was registered against three policemen and two others - Gopal Reddy, the owner of a toddy shop and his worker Jagir Tamatarwala, who allegedly assaulted the victim, Sagir Qureshi (20), before they handed him over to the police.
The family of the deceased had alleged that the cops beat up Qureshi, causing his death. The investigation into the case has been handed over to the CID. The officer added that the cops were suspended to ensure that they could not influence the investigation process.
On Tuesday night, Qureshi, a resident of Iranipada, had gone the toddy shop near the Shanti Nagar police chowky where he had a fight with Reddy and Tamatarwala.
