MUMBAI: Members of the Indian Youth Congress have sat on an indefinite hunger strike outside the Vasaitehsildar office demanding crematorium land for the minority community, especially Muslims.

The demand for a burial ground has been long pending with the state government, said Sameer Vartak, Vice-President, Lok Sabha Committee, Palghar. He along with five other members has decided to draw the attention of the government to the dead who need burial space.

Despite the growing population, there has not been any new crematoriums for the minority communities like Muslims and Christians since the past several years. Last year the Vasai taluka Muslim Kabrasthan Committee had protested against the lack of burial grounds. The protest had resulted in the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation ( VVMC) taking steps to improve the condition of the crematoriums.

But along with improving the existing crematoriums there is a need to provide more burial grounds. Vartak said that land reserved for burial grounds should be made available on a priority basis.

Atleast 26 villages having minority population are suffering as families have to run from one place to another to find space for the dead.
