MUMBAI: In a joint operation, officials from the Bhandup police and the Social Service Branch (SSB) and a NGO raided restaurants, eateries, a bakery and scrap dealers' shops and rescued around 15 child labourers. The raid was carried out on March 4 in Bhandup locality. Police arrested nine persons for employing children. The case was later handed over to the Bhandup police for further investigations.
Police said that the raid was planned over a period of four days after receiving several tip-offs from informants about minor children being made to work under strenuous conditions. "Fifteen children, all boys, were rescued. Eleven hailed from UP, three from Bihar and one from Rajasthan," said Assistant Commissioner of Police (Bhandup division) Mahadev Gundewadi.
Bhandup police senior inspector Shrirang Nadgauda said that the raids were conducted at around 12 pm at Chapal Galli, Nepali Galli, Darga Road, and Sonapur Lane at Bhandup (west). "A case under sections 3 and 14 of the Child Labour (Prohibition and Protection) Act and section 23 and 26 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection) Act against the arrested nine," said Nadgauda.
