MUMBAI: A vegetable vendor was brutally assaulted by a group of seven men at a chawl in Kandivali West on January 28.
RajmaniMurlidhar, the complainant, had a dispute with some of the accused earlier in January. Murlidhar (38), a Kandivali resident, owns an autorickshaw. "On January 24, one of the accused, RafiqShaikh, took away Murlidhar's auto meter. Two days later, Murlidhar confronted Rafiq's aide, FirozShaikh, about it. The two had a heated exchange of words and ended with blows," a police official said. "Firoz decided to take revenge and gathered all his associates."
Around noon on January 28, the group went to Valmiki chawl near Shiv Sena ground in Kandivali and accosted Murlidhar. They attacked him with five knives and two choppers. Murlidhar sustained grievous injuries on his head, arms and legs. He was later admitted to the Bhagwati Hospital by the police.
A case of 'rioting' and 'attempt to commit murder' has been registered against Firoz Shaikh, Rafiq Shaikh, Jaffar, Vikram, Rakesh, Chimya and Duppan. The weapons haven't been seized.
