MUMBAI: Congress president Sonia Gandhi will launch a new childcare initiative at Palghar on the outskirts of Mumbai Wednesday.
The programme assures a package of health services for all children up to 18 years of age. This child health screening and early intervention programme has been named the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram.
It is part of the National Rural Health Mission. The programme will be extended to cover all districts of the country in a phased manner, ultimately hoping to cover 27 crore children.
A set of 30 common ailments and health conditions has been identified for screening and early intervention. This includes birth defects like Down's Syndrome, congenital cataract, deafness and heart defect and deficiency conditions like anaemia, malnutrition and goitre. Developmental delays and disabilities like hearing and vision impairment are also covered.
The services will be provided through dedicated mobile health teams comprising two Ayush doctors, nurse and pharmacist located in every block.
The teams will screen all children in the age group of 0-6 years enrolled at anganwadi centres at least twice a year. Besides they will screen all children enrolled in government- and government-aided schools. Newborns will be screened for birth defects in maternity centres.
