MUMBAI: Ajay Maken, Union minister for housing and poverty alleviation, has said that mega cities like Mumbai need to review their FSI (floor space index) policy in order to "encourage affordable housing".
Meanwhile the Centre is planning to devise a policy to grant "infrastructure status" to affordable housing schemes to fill the accommodation need in urban areas. "This can be treated as a sub sector of real estate and can be given infrastructure status," the minister said. He was speaking at an international meet on 'Governance of Mega City Regions' organised by the CII in partnership with Centre for Policy Research (CPR) in Mumbai Monday.Maken said, "About 50 per cent of Mumbai's population stays in slums. In Delhi also, about 84 per cent of homeless people are self-employed and contribute towards economic growth. Since they live close to their workplaces and are an integral part of the India's urbanisation story, we need to create affordable housing irrespective of location, even in premier areas of mega cities. We need to bring service providers nearer to consumers."
Maken said, "In order to address this issue we need to review the FSI policy and make appropriate changes to boost affordable housing in Mumbai. The state is the authority responsible for doing so. It should consider this option."
