MUMBAI: To prevent rampant drawing of water from private wells in the city, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to charge such use of water at commercial rates.

BMC will send a proposal regarding this to the state government asking for permissions to levy the rates.

Additional municipal commissioner Mohan Adtani said, "We know that water from private wells are being drawn for commercial use. But the civic body does not have rights to take over these wells as they are privately owned. However, use of water from these wells can be charged commercially by levying related taxes on it."

The issue was raised by former mayor and Shiv Sena corporator Shubha Raul in the standing committee. Raul said, "The BMC should take over these private wells to prevent indiscriminate discharge of water. If it continues, it will lead to diminishing of underground water levels."

As per civic data, there are 1,581 wells in the city, of which 797 are public and 784 are private wells Adtani said, during the times of water crisis the collector and the civic body has the authority to control the use of well water in that particular region.
