Party workers clash in Ghatkopar, business loss for shop owners

MUMBAI: Shop owners paid heavily for losses in their business on Wednesday for the fight that broke between two political party workers the previous evening in Ghatkopar (East) locality.

Several shop owners were made to shut down their business to show that they are in support for social Ashok Bhanusali who had claimed to have been assaulted by workers of the rival party, said Pant Nagar police.

Several shop owners who were against the protest and shutting down business on Wednesday told TOI that normal life of people gets affected due to nuisance of the political party. "We closed the shop under pressure fearing no untoward incident should take place.

The shop owners from both east and west part of the Ghatkopar incurred losses in lakhs of rupees in a single day," said a grocery shop owner.

Bhanusali switched from the BJP to Congress two years ago. TOI's repeated attempt to contact Bhanusali went in vain.

Additional Commissioner of Police (East region) Quaiser Khalid said that they have booked unidentified men under several IPC sections for assault, unlawful assembly and rioting. "Initially Bhanusali denied lodging a complaint late on Tuesday evening. Later at midnight he complained of severely attacked and approached the police station with the complaint. We have registered an FIR and have collected closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage to get it confirm the actual cause that led to the incident," said Khalid.

A Pant Nagar police officer said that the matter worsened after the BJP party worker learnt that Bhanusali have invested in a movie. "The film has portrayed a BJP leader in a villain character which triggered the issue when the party worker learnt about it. However Bhanusali is not revealing the names of the attacker despite knowing them," said the officer.
