MUMBAI: Two incidents involving the insensitivity of bus drivers towards women in the past fortnight were brought to the notice of the BEST committee on Wednesday. The issue was raised by Shiv Sena workers' union leader Suhas Samant . "These incidents are not pardonable and I have written complaints from the women passengers ," he informed the panel. He said the drivers in both incidents were rude to pregnant women and denied them entry from the front door of the bus.
In the first incident, he said, a six-month pregnant woman was stopped by the bus driver from boarding from the front door. "When she told him she was pregnant, the latter shamelessly laughed at her. He then looked at her scornfully and said she was lying about her pregnancy. He had the audacity to tell the woman 'I think you are not pregnant, so go and board from the other door' ," Samant told the committee . In the second incident too, a pregnant woman was denied entry from the front door.
"Drivers need to respect women and have no business deciding whether a woman is pregnant or not. Will he behave like that with his own daughter?" he said. Samant said that the conductors were given the responsibility of ensuring bonafide passengers used the special privilege of boarding from the front door. "Women with babies in their arms have also been denied entry from the front door," he added.
BEST's officer on special duty Victor Nagonkar said though only "expecting mothers" are to use the front door, one can allow women carrying infants to use it as well. BEST panel member Ravi Raja said that there was a need for random checks in the 2,000 buses which don't have CCTV cameras installed yet.
