Partly burnt body of auto driver found in Virar

MUMBAI: The partly burnt body of an auto-rickshaw driver whose face was smashed was found in Chandansar of Virar on Thursday.

According to the Virar police, the body of Gaurav Kesari (23) a resident of Jivdani Temple Road was found in a drain at Chandansar in Virar (east) by passersby. The victim's head and face was smashed with a boulder and the killer had set the body on fire. The blood soaked boulder was lying near the drain.

According to the victim's father Raghunath Kesari, his son had left for work on Wednesday afternoon. He used to drive auto between Chandansar and Virar railway station every day. When he did not return home till late Wednesday night, the family went in search of him.

Gaurav's mobile phone was switched off. Other auto drivers in the area told the family that they had not seen Gaurav since Wednesday afternoon. The family were to register a missing complaint with the Virar police, when they received a call from the cops. The body was identified based on the licence lying in the shirt pocket of the victim.

The police have registered a case under Section 201 (destroying evidence) and 302 (murder) of the IPC against unknown persons. The body has been sent for post-mortem.
