Mumbai police for making city drug-free

MUMBAI: The Mumbai city has become a hub of the narcotics if the statistic of the Mumbai police is to be believed. The anti-narcotic cell (ANC) of Mumbai police alone seized 731kg of various drugs including cocaine and amphetamine worth Rs 14 crore as campared to Rs 2.2 crore last year.

According to the statistics, the Mumbai police registered 540 cases and arrested 2,673 persons in all ten times more than last year. Last year, the police had registered 256 cases and arrested 631 persons and seized 526kg of drugs worth Rs 2.20 crore.

"The seizure and arrest does not indicate the rise in the drugs but our rate of detection has gone up. We have enhanced our patrolling and our drive to make Mumbai drug free," said Vinayak Deshmukh, deputy commissioner of police.

Deshmukh said that in 2012 they seized some of the high quality drugs like cocaine and amphetamine more than any other drugs. "There is a huge demand for the amphetamine drugs which is the modern time drugs. We have seized 34kg of cocaine worth Rs 2 crore and 22kg of amphetamine worth Rs 11.5 crore." Police said that this year the number cases on consumption too has increased with the arrest of 2,500 persons in 2012 as compared to 491 in 2011.

"This year we have increased our vigilance and have made cases on people consumption," added Deshmukh.
