MUMBAI: A Sewri fast track court will hear the alleged custodial death of the December 2002 Ghatkopar blast case accused, Khwaja Yunus on January 18. A prosecution witness is expected to be examined during the hearing.
The court had earlier framed charges against suspended inspector Sachin Vaze and constables Rajendra Tiwari, Rajaram Nikam and Sunil Desai. During the hearing, Vaze admitted to the FIR.
The police had initially claimed that Yunus, a software engineer picked up as a suspect in connection with the Ghatkopar BEST bus blast, escaped while being escorted to Aurangabad for investigation on January 7, 2003. The cops had also claimed that Yunus was spotted by villagers after his escape. However, following a CID probe ordered by the high court, four officers were booked for allegedly murdering Yunus while in custody.
The Bombay high court had directed the CID to consider the complaint lodged by Ghatkopar blast co-accused, Dr Mateen, as a fresh FIR in the case. Dr Mateen had deposed in a court that Yunus was mercilessly beaten up by the police during interrogations in his presence until he vomited blood and collapsed. This was later converted into an FIR. Dr Mateen was later acquitted in the blast case.
