MUMBAI: Congress leader Rajanitai Patil on Wednesday filed nominations for a bypoll to the Rajya Sabha seat vacated after the demise of former chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh.
Patil, who hails from Beed in Marathwada, had on Tuesday been declared as the party's choice for the seat. Her selection is seen as a party's attempt to enthuse party activists and supporters in the Marathwada region.
Deshmukh's untimely demise has triggered a fear of leadership vacuum in Marathwada among a section of senior Congress leaders. Patil filed her nominations at Vidhan Bhavan in the presence of chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, state party president Manikrao Thakre, and senior Congress leaders. NCP leaders including deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar were also present on the occasion.
