MUMBAI: The Republican Party of India-Athawale group (RPI-A) will begin its membership drive from November 7 in Mumbai. The membership drive will be inaugurated at hands of party president Ramdas Athawale. "The drive to increase party's base is done with an eye on the general elections and assembly polls," Athawale said in a release issued by the party on Tuesday.

According to the party release the drive that commences from Wednesday will end on January 10, 2013. "Party aims to enrol ten lakh members," the release mentioned.

Once known as close ally of UPA and DF government in Maharashtra, the RPI-A faction drifted from the Congress-NCP and joined the saffron bandwagon. Hurt with not getting respectful treatment Athawale decided to break his association with the Congress-NCP and formed an alliance with the Shiv Sena-BJP.

Athawale who is the new alliance of the Sena-BJP is against any kind of association with the Raj Thackeray led MNS. After reports of Thackeray cousins-Sena CEO Uddhav and Raj likely to join hands, the RPI-A chief had openly expressed his displeasure with inducting the MNS as poll ally of the Sena-BJP and RPI alliance.
