Taushik Qureshi (25) a resident of Chowdhary Compound in Wakanpada, of Valiv in Vasai (east) was thrashed by a mob after they found him trying to gain entry into some flats in the locality at around 9 pm on March 11. Qureshi was beaten up, even burnt with live electric wire and kept captive for around 14 hours before being handed over to the Valiv police.
The police admitted Taushik to the government hospital where he succumbed of his injuries on Friday. While the police had registered a case against unknown persons no arrest was made.
Taushik's family said that the youth was not a robber and that he was waiting on his two-wheeler in their locality. The family said that the mob, comprising men from the locality, had assaulted him without any reason. They alleged that Taushik was tortured and handed over to the police when they realised he was in a bad condition.
The family protested outside the police station and demanded action against the men who hit him. The family alleged that if Taushik was caught stealing he should have been handed over to the police station immediately. They alleged that the youth was kept captive for several hours and was not given even water.
The police has arrested two men, alleged to have been part of the mob. Police said that Taushik had past criminal cases against him.
