Man kills five-year-old daughter at MIDC-Andheri

MUMBAI: A drunk man strangled his five-year-old daughter to death and tried to end his life by consuming detergent solution when the MIDC police reached to nab him early on Thursday. The incident occurred in between 4.30am and 5am when the accused identified as Vipul Mehta (39) where he stayed on the second floor flat of MMRDA building at Poonam Nagar in MIDC-Andheri locality, said the police.

Mehta committed the offence when his 24-year-old wife who is employed as a singer in bar did not respond to his calls. "Mehta repeatedly tried to get in touch with his wife. He got annoyed when the victim's mother did not respond to his calls. Finally, he attacked his own daughter and strangled her to death before consuming detergent and tried to escape," said MIDC police senior inspector RB Mandage.

The matter was observed when few neighbours got suspicious on hearing the victim's scream coming from her second floor flat. At the time of incident the victim's mother was not present in the house. "The neighbours called the police and immediately a team reached the spot. They were unable to save the victim as the door was closed from inside. On seeing cops the victim drank detergent and tried to escape. But he was nabbed and he collapsed," said the investigators.

Mehta is currently getting treated at JJ Hospital and his condition is stable. In the complaint, victim's mother said, "She has been together with Mehta for the last 9 years. He suspected me and even fought regularly with me over my profession. However I continued my work because my husband was not earning much to look the daily livelihood of the family."

The victim's mother learnt about the incident when returned home after she received call from the police. The victim was rushed to hospital by the cops but was declared dead on admission. Mehta has been charged under the Indian Penal Code section 302 (murder). "Mehta will be arrested once he get discharged from hospital," said Mandage.
