MUMBAI: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) on Monday arrested a female accountant in the alleged cash-credit cheating case of Rs 58 crore. The police had earlier arrested five persons in this case where the accused had duped the south Indian education society (SIES) by promising them high returns on their fixed deposits.

Varsha Goilkar, who earlier worked with the SIES as an accountant was terminated from her job soon after the cheating case was registered.

The police have so far arrested Mohammed Fasih, chairman and managing director of the Showman Group that runs the countrywide Sheesha lounge chain, Avinash Khandale, Roy Josesph and Anil Pawar, an MBA, in this cheating case. There are more than 18 FIRs against these accused including 14 with the Mumbai EOW alone. The cheating amount mentioned in these 18 FIRs is more than Rs 2.50 crore.

"Pawar had approached the SIES through Goilkar, his former colleague at a different workplace. As commission, Goilkar got more than Rs three lakh from Pawar. She had been summoned several times before being arrested. Once her role was established, she was placed under arrest," said a senior EOW officer. Goilkar is the first woman to be arrested in this case. Her husband, S B Goilkar, said that his wife had been cooperating with the police and that Pawar had threatened them to keep quiete.

The police have filed charge sheet in at least eight such cases against Pawar and associates. Pawar, who stayed in a chawl at Tardeo, had approached the SIES authorities claiming to be a financial consultant and stated that he had strong connection in some nationalized banks. "If you invest money in fixed deposits in certain banks, you will get one per cent more interest due to my connection," Pawar reportedly told SIES authorities. The accused forged papers and on the SIES FDs, they availed the cash credit facility.
