MUMBAI: The Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation's Mayor fund has benefited 171 patients in need of money.
The fund was set up in February 2013 to help patients meet their medical bills. A decision was taken to give between Rs 5,000 to 15,000 to patients. Corporators are now demanding that the financial aid be raised to between Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000.
In December 2010, the proposal to set up the fund was made. The proposal was approved in 2013 in which it was decided to give Rs 5,000 to a patient with a medical bill of Rs one lakh, Rs 10,000 for a Rs 2 lakh bill and Rs 15,000 for a Rs 3 lakh bill. Corporators say that a large number of requests from patients are received. The committee comprising the mayor and 12 corporators go through the requests and sanction money based on the income and urgency of the applicant.
The municipality is now appealing to corporates and residents of the Vasai-Virar region to contribute to the Mayor's fund to help patients in dire need of money.
