Six arrested for cheating diamond trader in Mumbai

MUMBAI: The crime branch police arrested six persons who had cheated a diamond trader from Gamdevi area to the tune of Rs 66 lakh by promising to sell the diamonds and escaping later. A case was registered on Febraury 10 wherein the complainant told police that the accused had taken away 144 carets of diamond.

Those arrested were Umesh Tapania (36), Vithalbhai Patel (52), Dhirubhai Patel @ Dhiru (52), Jayesh Kanojia, Bhatatbhai Moradia (37) and Kantibha Sawaliya @ Ghanashyam (47). Tapania, Patel and Dhiru were arrested in Mumbai while the three others were caught from Surat. Police said that the accused have admitted to the crime.

Tapani and Patel told police that they got 12 carets each and sold them at Malad in Mumbai. Dhiru, Moradia and Sawaliya went to Surat to sell their share (32 carets each) but were cheated by one Jameel alias Nazir,a Hyderabad resident, on the pretext of selling the diamonds to third party. All the accused have previous criminal record.
