MUMBAI: A four-storey illegal residential building in Nalasopara (east) which was being razed down by the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) on Friday allegedly collapsed during demolition. No one was injured.
A video of the building collapsing was circulating on Whats App since Sunday morning leading to panic among residents in the locality. The building located in More Nagar, Nalasopara (east) was being razed down by the civic demolition squad. The building collapsed on the road but no one was injured. Civic officials said that the building was ready for possession but had not been occupied.
Civic officials said that the structure was so weak that as the demolition squad began razing it down, it was shaking. The workers stopped work and moved away, even as the structure came crashing down.
The VVMC has undertaken a drive against illegal structures in the region. A two-storey under construction building in Sahakar Nagar, Virar (east) was also demolished by the municipality. Civic officials said that an illegal residential tower was coming up on the plot.
Illegal structures have been mushrooming in the Vasai-Virar region. Most of the structures are residential towers and chawls. In many cases, the rooms and flats are sold to prospective buyers months before the construction work begins. No action has so far been taken against the builders engaged in illegal construction.
