10 SGNP monkeys ‘poisoned’ to death

MUMBAI: At least 10 monkeys were found were found dead near Tulsi lake in Mulund on Saturday afternoon. An animal activist said that the monkeys were possibly poisoned. Pawan Sharma, president of Resqink Association for Wildlife Welfare, said that there was food, possibly rice, close to where the carcasses lay. A pair of burnt hand gloves was also found nearby, he said.

"It is possible that the monkeys were meant to be a bait for leopards which frequent the lake area," said Sharma. The caller told me that birds were pecking at the animals, two of which were still alive.

Sharma said that a few scavenger birds—crows and kites—were spotted near the simians, whose bodies had turned bluish. These birds, said Sharma, had very likely fed on the dead monkeys. "The place is meant to be well guarded," he said. "The area is out of bounds for activists but others have access," he said.

Late on Saturday evening, conservator of forests Vikas Gupta in a text message to TOI said that nothing had been found until then.
