The inaugural event was held at some colleges on Thursday. Officials plan to reach out to students through social networking sites.
The cell hope to bring about awareness on drug abuse and to make college campuses and the neighbourhoods drug-free. In the pilot project, Narayan Guru College (Chembur), St Andrews (Bandra), Lala Lajpatrai (Haji Ali), Bhavan's College (Gamdevi) and Atharva college of hotel management (Kandivli) have been picked up for the campaign. Deputy commissioner of police N M Chavan said, "Our policemen, along with NGOs, will bring about awareness on drug menace. Once this is successful, we will select another five colleges and so on."
Around 2,000 students from Narayan Guru College (Chembur) and neighbouring colleges visited around 4,000 families to create awareness on drugs on Thursday. Principal Anna Fernandes said, "It is important to seek the root cause of the problem. Our students visited families and got information on their socio-economic profile, their living conditions. The data can be provided to the police and they can analyse it. They need to involve social activists," she said.
"Though we can prevent such activities on the campus, it is important for the police to form a social support group, where parents can be invited. There is also pressure from peer groups," said principal V I Katchi, Bhavan's College (Andheri). In some colleges, senior police officials have shared their personal numbers, where students can call and inform them about drug peddling. St Andrew's College (Bandra) principal Marie Fernandes said most advertisements on parties and night life were promoted online.
