MUMBAI: Acting on intelligence sent by the Customs, officers of the Yellow gate police station on Wednesday seized three small boats smuggling sand from Belapur to the city.

The boats, Sultan, Mona and Merry, held over 35 tonnes of sand. The police arrested two persons, Haroon Bharech and Shailendra Prasad.

Both were booked under IPC Section 379 (stealing). The Customs and the police found that the boats were registered in the city but carried no documents or permits from agencies like the maritime board and the Coast Guard.

"The three boats comprise two barges and one tug," investigating officer S Kadam said. "The two men were transferring the sand, believed to have been stolen from Belapur. We have summoned the boat owners."
