MUMBAI: Multiple entry and exit points should be allowed for undergraduate programmes in the country, said experts at a symposium on 'Challenges for Education in Modern India' at the ongoing Indian Science Congress on Tuesday.

The session was conducted at the Nehru Centre in Worli and had academicians from all over the country presenting their views on the challenges facing education in the country.

"The highly competitive system will result in a high dropout rate," professor Varun Sahni, from Jawaharlal Nehru University said. "The system would be extremely harsh on late bloomers who discover their talent. The system would have to be extremely flexible in allowing people to switch fields late in life."

Professor Sanjay Dhande spoke about the ecosystem that the country needs to provide to achieve global leadership in technology by creating intellectual property rights at institute level. He also spoke on wealth creation from IPRs. He said the country needed policy initiatives such as emphasis on innovation and entrepreneurship, offering quality education at lower cost and cutting-edge technologies.

Professor HC PRadhan, former centre director of Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, called for a paradigm shift in teaching to meet the challenge of science education and stressed on large-scale training programmes.
