MUMBAI: With 10 days left for the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon (SCMM), the organizers announced that former Wimbledon Champion Marion Bartoli will be the International Event Ambassador. Over 40,000 are expected to participate in the 12th edition of SCMM to be held on January 18.

"It gives me great joy to come to India to spread the magic of running and sport. In the last decade or so, India has witnessed a running revolution and the sport has grown manifold," said Bartoli.

Actor John Abraham, face of the event, said, "Running has improved in India and I have seen the number of participants at SCMM increase year after year. As an actor I have always felt that one should look after the physical fitness and invest a minimum of one hour daily in some kind of sporting activity or running."

Among those leading the field at the start line will be Kenyan defending champion Evans Ruto and marathon veterans Luke Kibet and Endeshaw Negesse.

Among women, the runners include Ethopian defending champion Dinknesh Mekash, Gladys Kipsoi, who returns to Mumbai after taking the second place last year, and Marta Megra, who debuted in Mumbai in 2013. Mekash, who is in form after having run three marathons last year, won the women's race at SCMM in 2014 and had secured the second place in 2013. Apart from a 2:28:08-win at SCMM, she finished the Hamburg Marathon and Hengshui Marathon at second and third places respectively last year.

Kipsoi finished second in all the three marathons she ran last year—in Mumbai, Lodz Marathon in Poland and another in Toulouse. She has run several races in France as her athlete husband Duncan Kiptanui is based there. The Kenyan runner is hoping to start 2015 with a first place in Mumbai and uphold her impressive running throughout the season.

Megra has run five marathons. This year, she aims for a podium spot in Mumbai. All eyes will be on Mekash, Kipsoi and Megra, who will look to have an upper edge over each other at the SCMM.
