The squads, called Shakti, will start work next week and will focus on the trans-harbour section. Besides weeding out criminal elements, beggars and urchins from ladies coaches, they will also assist teams of ticket-checkers to crack down on ticketless travellers.
Each Shakti squad will comprise three male and one female constable. The squads will be divided between the Byculla-Kurla, Kurla-Thane and trans-harbour sections. "Most members are new recruits and hence, are eager to work. We have been briefing them on crime patterns on the suburban railways and co-ordination with the Government Railway Police (GRP) teams. To ensure that maximum areas are covered, the RPF squads will not be posted in the same areas that are already covered by the GRP teams," an official said.
Putting differences between the two departments aside, the RPF and the GRP seem to have joined hands for the cause of women's security. The new recruits in the Shakti squads have been asked to accompany GRP teams on Central Railway for a week so that they get some training and learn how to go about their duties.
"Four other woman personnel-led squads, which were constituted last year, will be merged with Shakti. The Shakti squads have been instructed to patrol all areas including foot overbridges," said senior divisional security commissioner, RPF (CR) Alok Bohra.
The RPF is set to get 600 new recruits on Central Railway by April. The ones recruited are being trained.
