Police suspect that Naushir Irani (76) and his wife Nargis (74) may have been murdered on Tuesday night. Their bodies were discovered by their help Surekha Pardhi who was asked to rush to the farmhouse on Wednesday after the couple's daughter, who stays in Mumbai, did not hear from them on Tuesday night.
Neighbours told the police that as the area gets dark by around 6 pm, families get into their homes and carry on with their lives. They did not hear any screams from the couple nor was there any barking of dogs on spotting strangers on Tuesday night.
The couple had not taken any security measures, including hiring a security guard or installing closed circuit television (CCTV). While the couple stayed on a 15 acre plot, the next bungalow was on a 35 acre plot and it was unlikely that their screams for help would have been heard. The police are baffled as to why the couple's six-month old dog did not bark.
The couple's children have told the police that their parents did not keep any valuables in the house located in Kotim village of Palghar.
