Immediately after the explosion the injured students were rushed to KEM hospital where they were provided with medical assistance. "Most of the students suffered 5-13% burns, some with 30% and were discharged after getting treatment. While one student is still in hospital with over 60% burns. The incident occurred when the students who have gathered for group study at the school laboratory out of curiosity tried to experiment with spirit and some chemical which they poured on the candle," said Pant Nagar police senior inspector SA Danavade.
Police said the civic body allowed the students, as majority of them, hails from poor families and have no place to study in their homes, the school is kept open for them to study at night. "However, instead of a class room, study arrangements had been made in the school's lab, where the incident occurred. The Education Committee has demanded to know why the lab was kept open instead of a classroom," said the police.
Danavade said they have booked the school staff for negligence and are collecting evidence. Prathamesh Khelare, who was closest to the explosion, suffered 62%, while Sahil Jadhav who was next to Khelare suffered 30% burns. The others suffered 5 to 13% burns.
