The Nalasopara police claimed to have nabbed the shooter who fired a round at Rajesh Singh (35) outside his Deep Residency office, Sainath Nagar in Nalasopara (east) on November 5. Singh died in the hospital.
The main accused, who gave Rs 10 lakh contract to kill Singh is absconding. The police has not revealed the identity of the suspect who gave the contract. The motive behind the killing remains a mystery.
Singh was a small time builder who carried out several unauthorised constructions in Nalasopara.
According to the police, Dhiraj Upadhyay (26), a Borivli resident fired two bullets at Singh, which hit his forehead and neck. Amir Khan (22), a Naigaon resident was riding the two-wheeler while Upadhyay was riding pillion. Mahesh Shetty (37) from Vasai and Santosh Shetty (29) from Borivli were on another motorbike and had kept a watch on Singh. The four accused were paid Rs 5 lakh and was promised the balance amount after Singh was declared dead.
Police said that the plan to kill Singh was hatched in October. The four men had stayed in a rented accommodation in Naigaon for a month before carrying out the killing. They had followed Singh's movement.
The police recovered the country made revolver and motorbike used in the killing. The accused men told the police that the revolver was procured from Uttar Pradesh.
The police relied on 6.5 crore call data records. The CCTV footage from nearby areas helped cops zero down on the motorbike registration numbers.
The suspects have been remanded to police custody till December 5.
