Traffic, civic amenities key issues in Ghatkopar

MUMBAI: Ghatkopar (W) has the best and worst of both worlds. While 60% of the constituency is covered by slums, the area also boasts of swanky malls, luxurious apartment complexes and a Metro station.

The constituency lacks wide roads and better civic amenities, but the election is likely to be won or lost on an emotional plank. The man to beat is incumbent MLA Ram Kadam, who has switched from the MNS to BJP recently. Sounding confident of his victory, Kadam said, "I have taken 80,000 people to pilgrimage centres and have a direct connect with voters. My office is open round-the-clock to help people."

He is steadfastly wooing the non-Marathi voters, including the north Indian community. In fact, at a function on Vijayadashmi, he promised this section of the electorate that he would deliver a speech in Bhojpuri post-victory. Ironically, the same man had slapped SP MLA Abu Azmi for taking the oath in Hindi in the state assembly.

However, a section of the BJP, led by Vinayak Kamath, who was promised the ticket, is unhappy with his candidature. Kadam though is banking on his goodwill and the charisma of Narendra Modi.

The Shiv Sena, which has three corporators in this assembly constituency, is putting up a spirited fight and using the victim card to corner the BJP. Sena candidate Sudhir More said, "People will punish the BJP for breaking the alliance. We have promised improvement of the LBS Road and a reservoir to meet the water supply needs, especially in hilly areas."

Harun Khan, the NCP corporator, too, has promised a flyover to decongest the LBS Road traffic. Khan said, "I have been a two-time corporator and my efforts in the ward to improve the civic infrastructure will stand me in good stead."

Roy Jacob, a resident of Narayan Nagar, said, "Traffic is a major problem in the area. Illegal parking, too, is a big issue because which the traffic slows down."

Corporator Milind Lande is contesting from MNS, but the party has weakened because of largescale defection by rank and file with Ram Kadam to BJP.

The Congress has allotted a ticket to Ram Govind Yadav. A Congress party worker said, "The party organization is very weak in the constituency which will definitely have an impact on the performance of the candidate."

Residents have also complained about lack of open spaces. Rohini Desai, a resident of Jagdusha Nagar, said, "The elected representative should plan to develop a nice park. The situation is such that people from our area drive down to Powai for morning walks."
