Shinde's old aide is Praniti's key opponent in Solapur

The odds are piling up against Praniti Shinde, daughter of former Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde and sitting MLA from Solapur City Central constituency, with a close family aide as her key opponent this election.

Praniti finds herself at the centre of a three-cornered challenge-the first from her father's former close aide Mahesh Kothe, who is contesting as a Shiv Sena candidate and is pitched to be her main opponent. Veteran leftist Narsayya Adam, popularly known as 'Adam master', BJP's Mohini Patki and Nationalist Congress Party's (NCP) Vidya Lolge jointly form Shinde's second challenge. Winning Muslim votes despite the entry of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen's (AIMIM) into Solapur is the third challenge she faces in her hometown.

Kothe, former mayor of Solapur Municipal Corporation and five-time corporator, was a Shinde loyalist for long. His father, Vishnupant Kothe, was Shinde's trusted friend for over four decades. However, Vishupant's ambition to become member of legislative council (MLC) was considered as the main reason that led to a divide between the two close friends, say Congressmen, who were aware of Kothe's desire.

Sushilkumar Shinde's embarrassing defeat against BJP's Sharad Bansode in May's Lok Sabha election gave Mahesh Kothe the necessary push. He quit the Congress and joined the Shiv Sena. Kothe knows he is riding on anti-incumbency wave in Solapur and has also hit out at senior Shinde for his dynastic politics. Among the many promises he has made are those of continuous water supply to the city; however, voters might think of his career as a mayor as well.

"I am also assuring restricting migration of young talent from Solapur. If there was a Mahayuti, an alliance with BJP, we could win with a huge margin. Now, our win will be with a decent margin and I am confident of that," Kothe told TOI.

Praniti, contesting for the second time, is aware of what she is up against. She is showcasing the development work she claims to have done during her campaign, but is refraining from taking on opponents. "Whoever is contesting against me is my opposition. I have been campaigning from the day I became an MLA for the first time. My work will conquer all odds," she said.

The two major contenders could be claiming they are confident of doing well, but they are largely dependent on division of votes between the Communist Party (M), NCP, BJP and AIMIM. Since Solapur has a 19% Muslim population, which was considered as Shinde's vote bank, AIMIM's entry could be the deciding factor. Adam has a trusted vote bank predominantly in the labour sector; while NCP and BJP have their own pockets of supporters in the constituency. Instead of making calculations of addition, the contenders are watching rival candidates, as it is the division of votes that will decide the poll outcome.
