MUMBAI: The IIT-Bombay annual cultural festival, Mood-Indigo, plans to reach out to younger students this year to help them deal with depression. The festival organizers have decided to address the issue of rising cases of suicide among younger students.

They will be visiting junior colleges to hold motivational talks to help students deal with academic pressure, paying special attention to those who intend to appear for competitive exams such as the JEE.

Not a single festival in city colleges these days takes place without espousing a social cause."We discuss many issues and then focus on one area, which we think can be addressed through our festival and where we can make a difference," Gunjan Gupta of the Mood-I team said. "We found more suicides occur among younger students, especially those from junior colleges. We will hold motivational talks for them."

The organizers will not restrict themselves to the student community. With the help of a couple of NGOs, the students will also be taking forward their campaign 'Bring Back the Smile' to orphanages and old-age homes.

The students plan to conduct happiness activities to increase interaction with people from both age groups.

Management students from Thakur Institute of Management and Research have decided to take forward the Swachcha Bharat Abhiyaan. The students have decided on a cleanliness drive at Bora Bazaar outside CST on October 4. Over 100 students from the institute will go door to door for awareness on segregation of dry and waste garbage. They will also distribute garbage bags.

The inter-IIT sports meet this year will, for the first time, promote a social cause. The students are tying up with an NGO to launch Mashal, an initiative to endorse and improve primary education. The event, which will see all 13 IITs participate, was launched on Tuesday at the Powai campus.

In August, over 2,000 students from 30 city colleges participated in a 'superhero' march to mark their protest against child abuse. The 'Superhero Mile' was undertaken by BMS students of Wilson College as part of their inter-collegiate fest, Adorea.

Xavier's inter-collegiate fest Malhar addressed the issue of carbon footprint this year. Swami Vivekanand group of institutions has begun a campaign 'Yuva for Seva', under which welfare activities will be taken up, such as skin donation, blood donation, village adoption, orphanage visits, legal aid services and health camps.
