MUMBAI: Constables earn less than peons working in any other establishment, the Bombay high court observed on Tuesday while directing the state to inform it about their pay scale and whether they have assured career progression.

A division bench of Justice V M Kanade and Justice P D Kode heard a suo motu PIL on shortage of police personnel. The judges said they had learnt that police personnel were the lowest paid employees. "Peons working in other any establishment now earn more than constables," said Justice Kanade.

Public prosecutor Sandeep Shinde said every year, 11,000 police personnel are recruited and their salaries are regulated by the Pay Commission. He informed that 42% are provided with staff quarters and the remaining are paid house rent allowance. The next hearing is on November 13.—Rosy Sequeira
