THANE: Diwali is over, yet, the demand for sugar-free sweets is still going strong in the city. There are many health-conscious Thaneites who, aware of the harmful effects of sugar, are opting for sweets that are without sugar.
R K Pandey, from a sweet shop in Manpada says, "There is a huge market for sugar-free sweets. During Diwali, we saw a huge increase in the demand and we were expecting a lull in the sales after the festivities were over. But the fact is that even now, we are witnessing a marked rise in the requests for sugar-free sweets."
Khajur paak and anjeer paak - the two most popular sugar-free sweets, are palatable thanks to the pure ingredients used feel the mithaiwalas. "We use silvered, powdered or chopped dry fruits to make these sweets and so they are healthy also," says a worker at a local shop.
The khajur and anjeer have high sweet content and so no extra sugar is added to them.
Niharika Dalal, a resident of Wagle Estate says, "I know that anjeer and khajur are not good for diabetics because they are naturally very sweet, yet the fact that no extra sugar is added to make these sweets has tempted me to buy these."
Chetan Patil from a sweet shop in Vikas Complex says, "There are also sugar-free cookies that are in demand here."
