MUMBAI: Nine months after his passing, stellar actor Farooque Shaikh remains etched in the memory of cinema lovers around the world. A film festival in Ireland screened a tribute to him by showing 'Listen Amaya' on September 22.

The annual Indian Film Festival of Ireland (IFFI) is organised by Siraj Zaidi who has acted in films like 'The Tailor of Panama' and recently in the television series `Samvidhaan'. This year's edition of IFFI was held in Dublin from September 19-22. Director Shyam Benegal and actors Divya Dutta and Atul Tiwari attended the event.

The screening of 'Listen Amaya' was organised at Dublin City University at 4.00 pm on the final day of the festival.

Remarkably, Zaidi only had a passing acquaintance with Shaikh Sahab yet chose to offer a dedication. He allowed entry free of cost to all those who wished to come.

He keenly misses Shaikh's presence on the performing arts scene. "I did not know this great actor personally. We only met briefly while he was shooting 'Umrao Jaan' in Lucknow. But I know from various sources that he was such a kind man and a true artist. He had an illustrious career not just in our film industry but in theatre and television as well. Various people have said what a great rapport he shared with all his fellow actors and his directors,'' Zaidi says.

Zaidi's close friend Salim Arif who directed Shaikh Sahab in the play 'Tumhari Amrita' was among those who testified to his intelligence and good-natured warmth. Arif's father-in-law Javed Siddiqi was Shaikh's close friend of 50 years. They were neighbours first in Nagpada then in Andheri. Siddiqi also co-wrote 'Shatranj Ke Khilari', where Shaikh was directed by Satyajit Ray. The two in fact shared the screen in 'Saath Saath' where Siddiqi played the role of the Editor who rejects Shaikh's frank expose against the rich and powerful.

Like everybody else, Zaidi was shocked and griefstricken by Shaikh Sahab's sudden passing on December 28 last year. "It was a shock to me. In fact I was expecting him to do more work in a great many projects now that he had begun a second spell of acting. His performances were so consistent. Cinema lovers around the world, including Ireland, respected him and admired his talent.''

Zaidi has worked with leading actors and film-makers in India and abroad and is in a vantage position to compare talent. He says, "Shaikh had a very simple, effortless way of approaching a character and portraying it in the manner of the man next door. This set him apart from those who 'perform' their roles in an over-the-top style. I think that was his deep hidden talent.''

The IFFI web site gives Shaikh Sahab's actor's filmography. It then says, "These films showcased his ability to portray complicated characters but (he) did so with ease. Bollywood Cinema not only looks up to Sheikh as a talented actor but also as a well liked individual. In the past few years, he appeared frequently on TV debates on the country's political issues and became popular for his frank opinions."
