Narayan Rane was the first to quit the Sena to join Congress in 2005 and along with him, a section of his supporters also broke their ties with the saffron party. But recently, most of those legislators returned to the Sena fold, apparently after they felt ignored by the Congress leadership. A month ago, senior leaders, such as Deepak Kesarkar and Uday Samant, also quit the NCP to join the Sena and the two are also set to contest the polls.
But leader of opposition Vinod Tawde is confident of the BJP making a clean sweep through Konkan. "We have snapped ties with the Sena but the Modi wave will ensure that the BJP would secure maximum seats from the Konkan region. After all, people are now tired of coalition government. They are keen on one-party rule," Tawde said.
But Rane feels that the people of Konkan will stand by the Congress, which he says, is the only party to take responsibility for the region. "We have taken a series of measures for the development of Konkan and I am sure the people will not regret if they vote for the Congress," he said.
Rane and Tawde's claims notwithstanding, residents of Konkan, however, blamed political parties for the continued lack of development in the region. Social worker Vishwas Thakur claimed residents were disillusioned by Rane's leadership. "Rane was a chief minister and then a cabinet member for well over two decades, but he has failed to do justice to Konkan. He completely ignored the tourism potential, which would have generated jobs for well over two lakh people in the last 10 years," Thakur said. Emphasizing his point, he said the people of Konkan rejected the Congress-NCP in the Lok Sabha polls in which Rane's son Nilesh was defeated by a huge margin in Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg, while NCP leader Sunil Tatkare was defeated in Raigad. Both lost to Shiv Sena nomiees, Vinayak Raut and Anant Geete.
Another Konkan activist, Subhash Mhatre, said it was unfortunate that the region was suffering owing to the lack of a decision on the Jaitapur nuclear power project. "Prithviraj Chavan and Rane were here to debate on the nuclear power project. Subsequently, Uddhav Thackeray, too, was here to oppose the project. Subsequently, no decision was taken. The fate of the multi-crore project hangs in balance now. We will have to take a decision," Mhatre said.
Observers feel parties should not consider a region only as their vote bank but they must first ensure overall development. "So far, the region had stood by one political party or the other, but now it will be a different situation owing to the five-cornered contest in the region," a former minister said.
