Bail for doctor who ‘filmed’ colleague

MUMBAI: The Sion hospital doctor, who has been arrested on charges of filming a second year MD student, was granted bail by the holiday court in Bhoiwada on Friday.

The Sion police arrested the doctor on Thursday following a complaint by the 27-year-old victim who claimed that the accused reportedly used his mobile to film her when she entered the bathroom. Sion hospital's sexual harassment committee, which is probing the incident, will decide the course of action on Saturday. The accused is yet to be suspended from duty.

"We are taking help of the Forensic Science Laboratory in Kalina to check whether the accused has deleted any record and also that whatever little images captured on his mobile was recorded at the time of the incident. The accused has been released on bail and has to come for inquiry till the investigation is completed," said senior inspector Baburao Gawit.

The accused and the victim are not known to each other. According to the victim, she entered the bathroom and was about to take a bath when she noticed a cellphone on top of the partition wall. In the complaint, the victim said, "On noticing the mobile, I shouted and asked who is in the other bathroom, but no one responded. I dressed and rushed out of the bathroom and knocked the door but the person didn't come out. Others in the hostel then rushed out and caught the person and seized the mobile from him."

However, the accused claimed in his police statement that he had kept the mobile on the partition wall while freshening up in the bathroom and he was innocent. The accused has been booked under the IPC section 354 (C) (any man who watches, or captures the image of a woman engaging in a private act) and also under the IT Act 66 (E) (violation of privacy).

Acting dean of the hospital, Dr Suleman Merchant, said the sexual harassment committee is probing the matter.
