Ajit attacks ex-CM again, questions Cong’s ad spend

MUMBAI: A day after throwing muck at 'Mr Clean' Prithviraj Chavan, Ajit Pawar, his deputy in the outgoing Democratic Front government, dropped another bombshell.

"The huge funds Congress is spending on advertisements in this election is astounding. It is much more than what it spent in the Lok Sabha polls four months ago," said Pawar. "How is
Congress suddenly awash with cash in the state?
Does this have anything to do with the files that Prithviraj Chavan cleared as chief minister and especially in his capacity as urban development (UD) minister?"

He also referred to a UD ordinance. Without elaborating on it, it said, "Why did the government bring an ordinance that existed for only a couple of days and was then withdrawn? Was it to favour any particular builder?"

Pawar's party, NCP, reeling from irrigation scam allegations, is trying to tarnish Chavan's image, with under a fortnight left for the polls.
On Wednesday, Pawar raised doubts on the "hasty clearance" of long-pending
files and projects worth Rs12,000 crore in the last two months by Chavan.

Revealing an ultra-aggressive side, Pawar, on campaign in Vidarbha, targeted
Congress more than BJP, MNS and Shiv Sena. After the NCP-Congress alliance snapped, NCP withdrew support to the Democratic Front government and President's rule was imposed.

Pawar began his
campaign tour in Vidarbha with an interaction with journalists. Asked about the allegations of corruption and irregularities marking his term as irrigation minister, he said his detractors have been proven wrong.

"You can't compare my style of working with that of Chavan. As CM, he sat over files for almost four years and then in a flurry cleared them. Multiple cabinet meetings were held every week just before the code of conduct was clamped last month," said Pawar. He blamed Congress for the break-up in ties and said NCP was confident of winning a majority on its own.
