After ‘betrayal’, Cong battles SP in Muslim-majority Mankhurd

MUMBAI: When Abu Asim Azmi, Samajwadi Party's state president and MLA from Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar, sent feelers to Congress leaders for an alliance (made and unmade in 24 hours), his detractors said Azmi was desperate to save his seat.

Azmi genuinely feared that a split in Muslim votes might cost him his seat, though he claimed he only wanted to prevent a division in "secular votes". Now, besides him, there are three Muslim candidates—Yusuf Abrahni, Congress; Altaf Kazi, MIM; and Sohail Ashraf, MNS—in the fray, and it may be an uphill task for him to retain the seat.

"Before I won from here, the constituency used to receive only 8 mld of water every day. Today, it gets 18 mld a day. People will re-elect me for my work. Congress will be trounced for its betrayal and Shiv Sena for its divisive politics," said Azmi.

Abrahni represented the seat in 2004, but was denied the ticket in 2009 to "accommodate" senior Congress leader Syed Ahmed (after he lost, he was elevated to the post of governor, Jharkhand). Abrhani claims it is he, not Azmi, who is in contest with Sena, whose candidate is the ominous-sounding Bullet Patil. "People know Azmi's politics. His focus on emotional issues has lost appeal. This has been traditionally a Congress bastion and voters will bring back Congress again," said Abrahni, who, too, must contend with other Muslim candidates.

In such circumstances, Sena may stand a chance as Maharashtrian votes are likely to be consolidated. Also, the absence of BJP will be an advantage for Sena. In 2009, MNS's Appasaheb Bhimrao Wagare, with 21,838 votes, not only ate into Sena's share, but also exceeded it. This time around, its candidate, Ashraf, may not attract that many Maharashtrian votes. "I don't know who is cutting into whose votes. Let them do the sums. The only thing I know is that people will repose faith in Uddhavji and elect me," said Sena's Patil, a former constable and independent corporator who joined Sena a few months ago.

SP corporator Rais Shaikh said that what "Bullet will not acknowledge publicly is that many hardcore Sainiks are unhappy that a new entrant has been nominated by ignoring those who toiled for years for the party". "This will harm him."
