MUMBAI: A Virar man was allegedly robbed by an unidentified person after claiming to be a relative of former Vasai MLA Hitendra Thakur.

The closed circuit television has captured the theft. Rajendra Naik (51) who owns a lottery shop was stopped by the accused in the parking area of his building in Manvelpada, Virar (east) on Wednesday morning.

The suspect introduced himself as Thakur's brother-in-law. When Naik pleaded ignorance, two men who were around vouched for him. Naik told the police that the suspect hypnotised him to part with cash and valuables valued at around Rs 70,000.

The Virar police registered a case of cheating under section 420 of the IPC. The CCTV footage has been handed over to the police. Police said that the suspect and the two men who vouched for him may be accomplices.
