MUMBAI: A consumer survey has revealed that 58% power users paid electricity bills using credit or debit cards. Cash and cheque are payment modes of 13% and 20% respectively.

The survey was conducted by Tata Power to understand the evolving choice of Mumbai's electricity consumers. Earlier, people would queue up for hours to pay electricity bills at the counters.

But these days, the queues have reduced as consumers are increasingly turning towards tech-savvy options. Moreover, 90% of respondents under the age group of 25 years (males and females) prefer settling their dues immediately mostly in cash, the survey stated.

It also reveals that the traditional modes such as cheques are most popular with age group of 40 and above.

Male respondents of 25 years and above facilitated online payment using laptops, those below 25 years preferred using smartphones. "The survey has provided us with unique insights into consumer habits, preferences and consumption patterns. It is important to note that consumers, particularly from the millennial generation, are keeping pace with newer options made available to them," said Tata Power executive director Ashok Sethi.

More than 850 respondents in the city were asked about their preferences in the survey. The power company extensively used social networking websites to ascertain consumer trends.
