NCP, Congress call for applications for all 288 seats

MUMBAI: Even as consensus seems to elude the Congress and NCP over sharing seats for the assembly polls, state NCP president Sunil Tatkare on Monday asked party workers to be prepared for contesting all the 288 seats, while the Congress already called for applications from its party workers for all the seats.

Tatkare told a well-attended rally at Amravati that NCP president Sharad Pawar would soon meet Congress president Sonia Gandhi to work out a seat-sharing formula; but in case there was no consensus, party workers should be prepared to contest all the 288 seats. "We expect to resolve the row over seat sharing amicably. In the 2009 elections, there was agreement of 174 seats for the Congress and 114 for NCP. Now we have asked for 50:50 share. If we cannot come to an agreement, then we must be prepared to contest all the seats," Tatkare said.

Even deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar and Sharad Pawar wants a change in the seat-sharing formula in view of the altered political scene. "We feel that between 2009 and 2014, the state has witnessed a complete change in the political scene. The NCP's strength has increased and under such circumstances, we feel that the party should get more seats," Ajit Pawar said.

A senior NCP leader pointed out that the party had not called for it, but they had received applications for the seats allotted to the Congress in the 2009 polls as well. "We will place all the applications before the scrutiny committee," he said.

Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan and state Congress president Manikrao Thakre, on their part, have refused to budge from their stand, saying there was no question of altering the seat-sharing formula. A senior Congress leader confirmed that the party has called for applications from aspirants for all the 288 seats. "We are waiting for a final decision. If there is no consensus, then we are prepared to contest all the 288 seats," he said. Thakre said, "There is no change in the political scene and the NCP's claim about its performance is hollow. We will never agree on the 50:50 formula. At the most, there can be an exchange of 12 to 15 seats. If there is no agreement, we, too, are prepared to contest the polls independently."
