Hawkers may soar 3,200% in Malad, 1,325% in Dadar

MUMBAI: The number of licensed hawkers in several wards may increase by over 1,000% if all applications under the recently-concluded hawker registration drive are accepted by the BMC.

A ward-wise analysis of data shows that most registration forms were filled from the G-North ward, comprising areas like Dadar and Shivaji Park. While 9,692 forms have been filled, the ward currently has only 680 licensed hawkers. After the scrutiny of the forms, if all the applications are approved, it will be an over 1,325% rise.

Similarly, P-North (Malad) now has 253 licensed hawkers, while 8,083 forms were filled from the ward. It means the area may see an over 3,200% increase in hawkers. A ward (Nariman Point, Fort) had the third highest number of registrations, with 7,845 forms filled.

In all, there are 15,159 licensed hawkers in the city and over 1.28 lakh forms have been distributed during the 10-day drive. But corporators have sought a month's extension for the drive, saying several spots in the city haven't been covered.

"There may not be a huge increase in numbers as licences will be issued only after stringent scrutiny and verifying all documents submitted. The BMC will try to issue licences only to genuine applicants," a senior civic official said.

The exercise was mired in controversy as activists and corporators alleged new people have taken up slots as hawkers and bogus applicants were being registered. The Supreme Court had on September 9, 2013, directed all states to implement the national policy on hawking. Under the policy, licences can be issued to 2.5% of the total population, which will be around 3.2 lakh considering Mumbai's population.

Civic officials added that those who have filled the forms will have to provide residential proof, proof of identity and prove they have been hawking at the spot. The last date to submit the documents is August 12. "After the registration drive, the BMC's biggest challenge will be to find hawking slots to accommodate new entrants. The number of hawking spots in every ward will decide the number of licences to be issued in that ward," another official said.
