Composer-lyricist Ravindra Jain explains Krishna's idea of dahi handi

MUMBAI: Prominent citizens who are familiar with Krishna Charitra have welcomed the rationalisation of dahi handi festivities in the wake of the Supreme Court ruling.

An ISKCON representative said she felt that the frenzy to achieve taller pyramids during Janmashtami had drained the occasion of spirituality over the past few years.

Composer-lyricist Ravindra Jain has explored every facet of Lord Krishna in his work, notably films like 'Geet Gata Chal' and 'Gopal Krishna'. His song from 'Gopal Krishna', 'Tu man ki ati bhori' is among the most touching accounts of little Krishna's antics at dahi handi.

Jain recalls the lyrics. "One day, all the women of Gokul visit Yashoda to complain that her mischievous Krishna is encouraging the cowherds of the village to break pots to steal butter and curd. Rather than look sheepish, the child is indignant that his mother should believe the women. 'Tu man ki ati bhori', he tells Yashoda. 'Jaako ghar bharyo dahi-maakhan saun, woh kyon karan lago chori (You are so innocent at heart. Why would someone whose home is filled with curd and butter steal from others)?"

The child's mouth is smeared with telltale traces of butter but he accuses the daughter of Ahir of having forcibly done that to implicate him. In the second stanza, he petulantly says he spends all day grazing the cows at his mother's bidding, still she disbelieves him. His wide-eyed innocence and his dear smile melts the heart of not just Yashoda but indeed every woman of Gokul who had arrived to complain.

At midnight Sunday, Ravindra Jain performed similar hymns to Lord Krishna in the holy town of Vrindavan. "I feel so privileged to be here at Janmashtami. Isn't it a wonder that the eighth incarnation of Vishnu, the eighth child of Devaki was born on ashtami day? That the god who gave the world the buddhi (wisdom) of the Shrimad Bhagwad Gita was born on budhwar (Wednesday)? It is to his message that mankind must return," he said shortly before taking the stage.
