Rains lash Mumbai, but skip lakes yet again

MUMBAI: The city may have recorded heavy showers over the last couple of days, but in case you thought the downpour may help Mumbai tide over the water crisis, there's some bad news: the rains continue to skip the catchment areas of major water-supplying lakes and Mumbaikars may have to brace for some tough days ahead.

The average total rainfall in the catchment areas as on July 10, 2014, stood at 292.7 mm as compared to 1,330.5 mm during the corresponding period last year. This means Mumbai has just 23 days of water stock available against six months at this time last year. If rains continue to dodge the catchment areas, the city which is already reeling under a 20% water cut could be hit further with the supply being reduced by an additional 10%. Meanwhile, between 8.30am and 8.30 pm on Friday, Colaba received 37.6mm rainfall while Santa Cruz witnessed 62mm.
