Rain wrecks traffic movement in Mumbai

MUMBAI: Major traffic snarls were reported in various parts of the city on Wednesday due to heavy rain. Navigating the Western Express Highway was particularly a problem for motorists, some of whom were delayed by hours.

Traffic was affected at Andheri subway, Bahar Cinema junction at Vile Parle, Bhandup, Mulund, Juhu and Malad subway. Water logging was also reported on the railway tracks at Kurla. The traffic police posted additional personnel for bandobast and to issue diversions wherever necessary. A smartphone app also started monsoon traffic alerts for motorists.

"WEH south-bound was choc-a-bloc from Kandivali to JVLR. It took me an hour to drive," said a motorist. On the north-bound stretch, traffic was affected between Bandra and Andheri around noon. At 10.45am, there were traffic jams on both ends of the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road. Traffic jams were also reported on Bandra-Worli Sea Link and delays of around 20 to 25 minutes were reported.

Snarls were also reported on the north-bound stretch outside Infinity mall at Andheri West, Sion to Dharavi, Senapati Bapat Marg, Seepz to Powai, Kanjurmarg on Eastern Express Highway, Ghansoli station to Airoli, Vashi gaon signal to Vashi toll naka and Malad Link Road.

Traffic officials advised motorists to be extra careful as several skiddings were reported.
