"Under the RTE Act, there is a mix of students in a classroom. Some are with special needs and others come from a different social setting. It is important that the school protects all the kids and they have the best learning experience," said a principal at the Open Forum for Principals (OFP) on Tuesday.
Teachers' training is most important, feel experts. "All teachers have to be trained to handle children with special needs," said Rekha Vijaykar, director ADAPT and former director of Guru Harkrishan School. "It is important to change the mindset. We will plan training sessions for our teachers to ensure we can address specific needs of students," said Suresh Nair, principal of Vivek Vidyalaya.
"The law cannot be implemented without the spirit. The most important part of the RTE Act is to maintain the dignity of the child," said Dr Tushar Guha, chairman of Nrityanjali group that facilitates the OFP.
